SUMMARY:Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Musicopia's Afro-Brazilian Music Assembly!
DESCRIPTION:Tue\, October 7\, 2025 11:00 A.M.\nChildren’s Department at Parkway Central Library \nOlogundê performs a diverse repertoire which includes the rituals associated with candomblé\, a synthesis of the Yoruba and Catholic religions in which various orixás (gods) are invoked; the breathtaking capoeira martial arts dance; and the exhilarating samba de roda\, the most traditional form of the inconic samba tradition which can be traced back to the semba of Angola. \nThe US-based Ologundê ensemble celebrates the rich Afro-Brazilian culture of Salvador\, Bahia through a diverse repertoire of music\, dance and martial arts. Comprised of Brazilians living in the United States and Brazil\, the ensemble includes former members of world-renowned music and dance troupes and is under the direction of master Afro-Brazilian percussionist Dendê Macêdo. \nThis event will take place in The Montgomery Auditorium\, ground floor.

DESCRIPTION:Classes will be held on Saturdays from 2-4 pm at Dendêzieros Studio in Germantown\nOctober 11 – November 1\, 2025 \nAttendees will learn to play timbal\, caixa\, surdo\, repique\, xequere\, tamborim\, pandeiro and much more with a former member of Timbalada! Dendê will teach you proper technique\, exercises\, tuning and maintenance\, improvisations and soloing\, traditional rhythms from candomblé and samba de roda as well as the original rhythms and breaks from bands like Timbalada\, Ilê Aiyê\, and Olodum. \nCost: $80 for the 4-week series or $25/class

DESCRIPTION:City Winery Philadelphia presents Dendê and Band live on Sunday\, November 16th at 7:30pm. \nDendê is a percussionist\, singer\, composer\, bandleader\, teacher\, and multi-instrumentalist. He’s been a professional musician since the age of 14\, when he appeared in the frontline of Timbalada\, Carlinhos Brown’s superstar percussion ensemble. Since 2001\, he’s been splitting his time between the US and Bahia\, working with his own ensembles. \nHis flagship group\, Dendê & Band reflects the cross-section of his deep roots in traditions like samba de roda and Candomblé and his eclectic musical appetite for other global rhythms like rumba\, afrobeat and mbalax. Over the past two decades\, Dendê & Band have performed at the Glastonbury Festival in the UK\, Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles; the KW Latinfest in Canada; the Penang World Music Festival in Malaysia; the Kalalu Festival in Saint Lucia\, Summerdance and Old Town School in Chicago the Lincoln Center Atrium in NYC among many others.

DESCRIPTION:O projeto Sons Reciclados\, que une arte\, sustentabilidade e criatividade\, acontece na sexta-feira\, às 19h\, no Teatro Gamboa\, sob o comando de Dendê Macedo\, com toda a renda arrecadada destinada ao local\, que passa por um processo de ação coletiva destinada a arrecadação para a compra e manutenção do imóvel. O multiartista constrói instrumentos percussivos a partir de objetos reciclados\, transformando materiais comuns em sonoridades únicas e expressão musical. O evento ainda contará com a presença de artistas convidados\, como o músico afro-americano Graham Haynes\, e os brasileiros Ângelo Santiago. \n“É uma honra receber amigos para celebrar e mostrar aos meus conterrâneos aquilo que desenvolvo. O projeto Sons Reciclados nasceu desse processo curioso\, criava um instrumento\, explorava toques\, guardava\, e aos poucos\, fui descobrindo caminhos e criando uma composição de sons. Observando o mundo ao meu redor\, me inspiro para as minhas criações\, seja em melodia ou percussão\, assim sigo transformando vivências em arte” conta Dendê Macedo. \nAutodidata\, Dendê desenvolve suas produções musicais no Brasil e Estados Unidos. Aquilo que seria descartado\, ganha uma nova vida pelas mãos do artista\, taco de golfe vira berimbau\, xequerê que é feito com capacete\, surdo a partir de balde e atabaque criado com vaso sanitário estão entre eles. A iniciativa alia originalidade e práticas sustentáveis\, resultando em uma performance com sons percussivos distintos.
