Leslie

Born in Philadelphia, Leslie Malmed received her formal education at New York University 's Gallatin School where she majored in World Music and International Politics. Upon completion of her studies at NYU, she joined the staff of World Music Institute and also began studying Afro-Brazilian music, dance, martial arts. From 1999-2008, Leslie was involved in all aspects of World Music Institute operations, having managed the box office, membership, community outreach, touring, educational programming and all of their technical operations.

The majority of her time at WMI was spent as the Manager of Touring and Special Projects. In this position, Leslie programmed, booked and coordinated tours of artists from all over the world for performances and educational programs throughout the United States and Canada as well as an educational series at the Juilliard School and Baruch College. These tours featured world-class artists ranging from the Grammy winning groups Masters of Persian Music and Ghazal to legendary Indian percussionist Zakir Hussain to world renowned oud and violin master Simon Shaheen among many others. She was also part of the curatorial team that co-produced the sacred music and dance festival for the Cultural Olympiad in Greece.

More recently, as the Manager of Technical Operations, Leslie helped to bring WMI into the 21st century by implementing the Patron Edge ticketing system which resulted in unifying all of their constituent data and giving WMI the ability to sell tickets, merchandise, memberships and donations seemlessly both online and over the phone. This work greatly increased the efficiency of the WMI workload and revolutionized the way that they handle sales.

In addition to her work at WMI, Leslie co-founded Mamadêlê Productions, a company that arranges performances, educational programs and travel that present the music, dance and martial arts of Bahia, Brazil. Through Mamadêlê she has managed the groups Ologundê,Dendê & Hãhãhães, Samba de Três and Arrastão who have toured both nationally and internationally at venues and festivals such as the Cultural Olympiad in Greece, the Juilliard School, the Peabody Institute at John's Hopkins and Symphony Space among many others. She has also toured with renowned Cape Verdean artist Lura where she served as a manager and Portuguese translator - a service that she has provided for many artists in the industry.

As a musician, she performs Afro-Brazilian percussion and vocals with the group Dendê, Hãhãhães which is a regular feature at the legendary world music club Sounds of Brazil. They have also appeared in performances at the 92nd Street Y, Musikfest, the Lake Eden Arts Festival and Princeton University among many others. Their music appeared in the soundtrack for the TV show "Mama Mirabelle" which was produced by National Geographic. Their new album, "The Tribe" is scheduled to be released in the Spring of 2009.

In the summer of 2008, Leslie joined the staff of Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana where she serves as Executive Director.
